Well it's snowing here so I'll have to wait to take the dogs for a walk.  So I re-visited that skinner.  It just didn't feel right in my hand.  Handle seemed too long & too busy.  Back to the grinder to make some adjustments and polish the blade...at least as much as I polish a blade!  I think it will do to skin some bears this spring.  Now what type of handle material??  Doc

That's a great blade doc like all your blades. I feel Like I should do you a big favor. Send it to me and I'll put a handle on it and get it back in time for the bear hunt..... Really!          :saywhat:      "[dntthnk]"   <><

Larry, I quench in cooking oil.  I'll heat it to around 125-150 F first.  Then just edge quench on my cradle that you can raise or lower by turning the carriage bolts.  I'll test the depth before I heat the blade to quench.  That way you can get the edge hardened and keep the spine softer for more flex to the blade.  Long answer sorry Larry!  Doc

Thanks Doc,
I have a similar adjustable table I use as a stop. Been using trans. fluid. But after reading Karl's responses re: quenching oils, been thinking about giving Brownells Tough Quench a try. Don't really know what if any diff. (other than less smoke) it'd make as my blades are super hard (in a sacrificial test they shatter when struck) when I take 'em out of the trans. fluid.
Thanks for the get back. Long time no 'speak'.
BTW, nice thread!!    ;)
