Need help with blade change/design.
« on: February 20, 2008, 07:38:00 AM »
A friend gave me this Old Hickory knife. I wanted some input as to some ideas for changing the blade design. I'll do some cutting and keep it cool enough to maintain the temper. The blade is about 5-1/2" long and 2" wide at it's widest. Any and all ideas are welcome!   :D

I see a beautiful 5 1/2" drop point hunter or a 5 1/2" spear point, both 1 1/2" wide.  You also have a good start at roach belly.

Maybe like this? Roach Belly kind of design with some osage handles?

Yeah, personally I'm pretty partial to drops and spears.  There is a gel that retards heat while working the steel.  Welders use it in certain situations.  I haven't ever used it but that may be a way to keep your blade cool also.

I have another Old Hickory Butcher knife I'm thinking about using to make drop point skinner. Something like this.
