Small camp ball pein hawk
« on: March 27, 2008, 12:57:00 PM »
Had a few hours to kill over the last day or two, so I figured I'd fire up the forge & have a play around.
I saw one of these on E8ay a while back & I've fancied one ever since.
Started out life as a broken-shafted, 8oz ball pein hammer (obviously!)

Now it's without a doubt, the sharpest thing I've ever made        The handle is Osage Orange. Don't know how it'll hold up, but it should be fine I reckon.
The head weight is a gnat's under 8oz & has a 1-7/8" cutting edge. OAL is 13"
I wouldn't want to try felling a big tree with it, but for camp-duty & light work it should be ideal! I've given it a triple quench & tempered it back (totally trial & error, it took 3hrs at 220C in the end!) to 54-56 RWC. Too hard to file sharpen, but comes up a treat on stones & should hold it's edge fairly well. I am a little worried that it may chip with use though.

Lemme know what you think....

that is EXACTLY what I was going to post!
Otherwise, that is waaaaaaaaaaay cool!
Think I'll do one now......

I'll tell you what, if it does chip, just resharpen and eventually you'll get back to where it didn't get so hard and it shouldn't be so brittle.

Wow! Thanks Karl, & everyone. I had thought about flatting the ball-end, but franky, in my excitement, I forgot until it was too late!  :D
Actually, I might set-to with the welder & extend the poll (I'm calling it a poll now  ;)  ) & then grind it back to flat.

Pretty sweet Rob. Looks like it would be useful for some butchering to boot.

Hmmm... Looking good Rob, what they say must be true, "great minds think alike"   ;)  I hammered this out of an old ball pein a couple months ago. Just picked up a drift for the eye hole and got it punched out yesterday. I like the tent stake hammer idea...

Great idea and nice work.  I got a couple of drifts here that I've been wanting to try too!
