Just got this one photoed
« on: April 13, 2008, 03:27:00 PM »
I finished this little knife the other day.

Blade: 4 1/2 inch of 5160
Handle: Amber Stag
Fittings: Stainless
OAL is 9 1/4 inch

I wanted to keep most of the bark on the stag. I just like the look sometimes. That means I had to thin the scales from the inside till I was happy with the way they flushed with the guard. Both sides look very close to the same. Makes for a slim handle.

Sweet blade Lin! I really like the grind on the blade. Looks like it will take one wicked edge.

A hunting knife does NOT get any better than that.
She is SWEET!
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Lin, do you solder your guards to the blade?  Or is it just a rather snug fit?

Very nice Lin.  I'm in the process of making arrangements to attend the show.  Amber stag is one of my favorite handle materials.  I'd like to see how this knife feels in the hand.

Thanks Bob. You should get a chance to look it over before the show.

Steve,
The guard is press fit, being tight where it cant ever get loose. I do seal the joint to keep water, blood, etc from getting in starting any rust later. I use JB Weld since the color is neutral.

Lin, beautiful work as usual!  Is it a mortised tang or is it a full tang that is just not visible in the photo?

A mortised tang is where the inside of the handle scales are grooved (mortised) to allow the tang to slide in to. Half of the tang thickness is removed from the inside of each scale for a snug fit. This material can be removed with a dremmel, chisel, or milling machine, etc. After a satisfactory fit up, the scales are carefully lined back up and glued together to form what is essentially one piece again. The front of the handle is checked for fit to the guard, adjusted if needed, and epoxied on the blade and guard.
I leave my handle a little large for final shaping, but already have my pins located. There are lots of variations of methods and you will find what works best for you as you make a few.
