Small Broadhead Hatchet Build
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:59:00 AM »
I posted a question a few days back about the hatchet in the book "From the Den of the Old Bowhunter". I really like the idea of having one to carry, plus I wanted an excuse to make one.
I started forging one a few days ago and just now am getting some pics where I can post.

The first one is the bar of 5160 carbon steel
5/16 X 1 1/2 X 5 inches long

The hardest part was getting the forging started. Trying to squish down the handle neck and bend the head over at the same time.

Now, just refining the shape a little at a time. I skipped some heats, but mangaed to take enough pics to give the genaral idea. Plus it's hard to take photos of yourself and not get burnt.

A little closer

Now into the forge to thermocycle and prepare for annealing.

I'll have more as I get the head sanded and start the handle. I am wanting to put a stag taper on it for the handle. More soon. Lin

about how many hours to get it at that point? That is some nice work...

Get a tri-pod set auto-shot on your camera and push a button and get ready.... camera does the rest.

Awesome work Lin.  After that thread on the broadhead axe I was wondering how long it would take one you talented craftsmen to make one.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

Very nice Lin.  What type of handle material do you intend to use...never mind...you mentioned stag.  Bringing one to Blade?

I finally got another picture if the hatchet just before I started to assmeble it. The handle is a small piece of Sambar Stag taper and the bronze pieces will be on the front and back of the handle. Lin

Thanks, I got the hatchet finished. Here is one Chuck Ward took today. The head and handle have a brushed finish. The Hatchet is about 9 1/4 inch long and the cutting edge is about 1 3/4 inch. I think it will weigh about 12-14 ounces, but have not weighed it. I'm going to have a sheath of sorts made for it too. Lin

What a great looking piece, Lin. I bet Chet Stevenson would drool over that!!!!!!!
