Helle blade shine removal?
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:03:00 PM »
I really like the Helle blades but I would like to do one with no shine on the blade.  I would like a mat finish or something similar.  Any Ideas?

Thanks Bill

You can sand blast with aluminum oxide to get a nice matte finish.  A granite monument/headstone company may be able to help you out.

If it is a Carbon blade just put it in some vinegar for about 30 minutes and it will patina to a dull gray color.

600 or 800 grit sandpaper with a little oil (to stop it from clogging) will give you an even satin finish.  Go in one direction only, the full length of the blade.

Or just get the viking blade.  Dull matt color with no markings already.

I built a muzzleloader for shooting matches once. On the top flat of the barrel to cut the glare I took some fine sandpaper and went down the length of the barrel taping the  barrel with a plastic mallet while the sandpaper was between the barrel and the mallet. It gave a nice uniform look.
