W1 and Curly Afzelia Hunter
« on: August 11, 2008, 10:59:00 AM »
Here's another one of those handle materials I wish I had a whole box of! It is stabilized, curly Afzelia, and is deffinitely on my Top 10 list.
The English customer sent me his own design on the blade and wanted a random hamon. He wanted a "surprise" handle material and my take-down assembly.
It's a full 6 inch blade with an 11" overall length.
(It's gonna be in your backyard, Rob!)
I haven't had the opportunity to post hardly anything in the last few months, and the next few don't look any better. I can't get out of the shop!

When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

I like that wood too, Karl! Nice one.

It's harder. I file all of my handles to shape. It cuts waaaaaaaay down on any type of dust, keeps me in complete control of the process, and avoids EVER inducing heat into the handle material. I get pretty well acquainted with each handle that way.
I find African Blackwood to be a little crumbly at first uintil I get it just about shaped.
This stuff was stabilized and a Cabinet Maker's rasp would barely touch it!

He's on a hunting trip somewhere right now, I'm not sure where. I couldn't get it to him in time for this trip so maybe he'll use it on the next one!
He's in
Cranfield, Bedfordshire

Another nice one Karl. The wood looks kind of like Oregon Black Walnut. Lin
