Bowie for the Russell Show
« on: August 13, 2008, 05:36:00 AM »
This blade pattern is one I have been making in a shorter version for a while, but have not had much success stretching it out and making it look right. This one turned out about the way I wanted. I have it down on paper now.

The blade is 10 inches of 5160 ( basic spring steel), the handle is Desert Ironwood, and the fittings are Stainless, Bronze, and Nickle Silver. The photo is different views of the same knife. Lin

Flawless. The (is it flame?) engraving at the back of the bolster & the flower pommel are exquisite! The wood is just mesmerising.

Rob,
Thanks. The filework is sort of a vine pattern, but more than one has seen flames in it. I forged a blade Thursday morning meant for this knife, but it cracked in the quench. Ouch!
I forged this one Friday morning and all went well. I've made several smaller knives along the way this past weekend, but this knife was my main project.
Yes, the wood is beautiful. I cant take credit for that. The Grand Maker of all things beautiful did that. Lin

I need to come down to Arkansas for some knife makin' lessons....

When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Thanks very much.   :)  I wish all of you could be in Rogers, Arkansas this weekend. It should be a good show. I appreciate the opportunity to go.

Lin, I have a question, you said "the blade cracked during the quench"!

Can you salvage that blade?  Reforge or rework it? or is it done for!

Steve
