Or maybe a KMG w/an extra wheel or two & an electronic speed control.
That's probably the most expensive single piece of machinery you'll buy for knife making unless you get into power hammers.

Go as big and expensive as you can!! You will only improve your ability to make the knives that you envision, and will have a LOT more success.
There has certainly been a zillion knives made with nothing more than a file and a bench vise, but if you can do it, get whatever you can.

yep karl, i've been BARELY scraping by with a 1x30 from harbor freight. i decided hey i put this much time effort and thought into it why not get a quality piece of equipment.

i will actually be able to do the grinds i want, i will be able to polish my grinds
more and much much higher and lower grits
and the fun of getting a new toy!

does anybody have one??? how big is the wheel that comes with it and how difficult is it to adjust it for using the wheel???

i'm sure i'll have to dish out the extra $60 plus shipping for the 10 inch wheel to....

The first grinder I had was the Grizzly.
It's the minimum you will need. Don't expect a lot out of it, but its a leap ahead of a 1 X 30.

I have the Grizzly also and I have the 10 inch wheel which I never use. Having made about 60 knives, I want to update to a KMG as it looks to be about the best. I also think the variable speed is a must.

After slightly "rounding" the wheel with a file, the belts track perfectly and I have no trouble using the wheel. If you mean does the electric motor bother me? No.
