The Learnin' Curve...
« on: January 15, 2009, 08:57:00 PM »
I thought it was a fitting name for the blade I'm working on at the moment... This is my first steel knife blade...

Heres a few pics with our home-made forge/kiln and the blade. Got it cherry red in less than two mins.

...Hope yall enjoy, any tips and advice are VERY welcome. I plan on using copper ground wire for my pins, and possibly osage scales.

Great start! Hard to go wrong with osage. Your just letting the air go up through the opening in the bricks aren't you? Also how high up in the pipe is your charcoal?

In the 2nd pic you can see the top and the coal in relation to the top of the stove pipe.

Theres wires holding the charcoal in the pipe, and the brick has a small wedge shaped opening to let the air in, increasing the temp.

Real neat and we had to buy charcoal and a leaf blower. Kept up warm in high 20's today!

The simple things are the best, especially when they work!!! I built a forge out of a brake rotor and some threaded pipe and my wife's hairdryer. Simple and functional...til she needs the hairdryer!!! Good luck with your "Learnin Curve" knife.
