Snakes Skins for an old Bear
« on: January 24, 2008, 09:07:00 PM »
Just acquired an old Bear Super Kodiak from an antique mall. Someone camo painted it very unproffessionally with big runs, thick gobbed on paint, then tried sanding it off ruining any finnish and decals it once had. several holes have been drilled in the riser, even a nail in one of them ! I sanded the riser and edges of the limbs, and scraped the heaviest of the paint off the limbs, not wanting to sand them and lose draw weight and possibly ruin the tiller. My plan is to either put snake skins on the limbs or another camo job. In spite of it being roughed around this bow still shoots great, and has no stress marks, splits, delams, or limb twist. I think with snake skins and refinnished riser it will look good in spite of the holes. My question? I need a source for snake skins, and the proper glue to affix it to fiberglass. Roughing up the glass for adhesion is no problem..., its allready rough ! Another option if cheaper, is there a company that makes imitation skins that are self adhesive? cheaper? how good do they look?

I'd appreciate it budog56, does it shine? I was just wondering about the imitations having a glare that I don't want in a hunting bow.

They advertise the price per set, is a set enough to do front and back of both limbs on a 60" recurve?

I was getting real snake skin from 3r's.Soaking them, then glueing up with tite bond. They look pretty good, but do have to have finish put over the skins or they will come unglued in wet moist conditions. The real skins are a bit harder to work with too I think.bowdoc

Randy,

I've got a set of the AWU Copperhead skins on my Binghams Take Down Longbow that I finished up last month.  I like them so far.  Make a run up to Georgetown and I'll show you what they look like.

Randy,

They will only do one side of the limbs.  One set of the Copperheads did the back of my 68" long bow with a couple of pieces that I'm going to use on some matching arrows.
