Another good day in Montana
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:22:00 PM »
I went to visit my friend and ABS Mastersmith Jon Christensen today and took along a knife to destroy. I'd done this some time back messing around but this time was for real. It was time to take the Practical portion of the testing for my Journeyman Smith stamp.

This included inspection by Jon, cutting a free hanging 1" hemp rope, chopping thru a 2X4 twice, shaving hair then bending the test blade to 90º. All these test steps are designed to insure the blade is forged, ground, heat treated, tempered and made properly. I'm happy to report that my blade passed with flying colors.

Barring any unforseen circumstances it's on to Atlanta for the Mastersmith Panel of Judges in May.

Congratulations Doug! I look forward to seing you in Atlanta.

A friend and fellow knife enthusiast made a knife and tested it in the same way yesterday. We were just reinforcing what we already knew, but it's good to do every once in a while. The knife did great and bent evenly and sprang back most of the way. I was pleased.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. You'll do well. Lin

Doug,
You did real good my friend.
This was my first time on the judging side of the test. I'm glad it was with a good friend.

Dougs knife passed easily. The 2x4 cut was especially impressive. Nice deep cuts.
He also showed me a few of the knives he had ready for Atlanta. I'm happy to say that if he finishes the others out like those were done that he will have no problem in Atlanta. His spear point bowie was fantastic.
Good work Doug.

I'll see you in a week Kevin and we'll talk about going to Atlanta.
Doug, way to go Friend.
Far as I'm concerned, the most important part of the flex test is the amount of return.
Looks like yours did really well.
It's great to have a good friend like you have in Jon.
I believe I'll come hang out at the testing room on Friday morning so I can shake your "J.S." hand!

Doug, Wow That's Great!!  I'm leaving Aiken today to go back to Boston.  Now I got to re-figure my travel plans for Atlanta.  Guess I'm a year too late as we'll have house & barn built here for next years blade show...Doc
