Some of what I've been up to
« on: May 15, 2009, 04:42:00 PM »
Well fella's, my recent unemployed status has spurred me to quite a bit more blades... More paying pieces rather than the charity that I used to do. I still find time for a few donations for good causes, like the trades, and boy scouts, but I'm making my way on my knives at present.

Some of us hunt with blackpowder, so the 45 cal short starter on this one should come in handy..

I've been making a lot of my funky ulu's, folks have told me there's no beating them for skinning!

I made a hunting set for a fella consisting of a bowie and a Funky ulu for skinning and general camp chores

I still found time to do a couple of nessmucks for a scout troup in Indiana. Myself and several other knifemakers on Paleoplanet each got some blanks, like the traditional style. After the first one broke in the quench, I came up with these One traditional style, and one that got a little "Custom" treatment. The funky one got a handle of pakkawood that I've been carting around since the 80's... Before every  cheap Pakistani doodoo knife started using it...

BTW, the 2 for the kids were made of D2... I figured it would be a little more maintenance free...

I like the starter idea on the first one and really like the Bowie. Good job on them all.

That second was a design change for a friend in England that does a lot of leatherwork. I sharpened it from the bolster all the way around to the tip, so he could invert the handle and use it for a drag cut. He said tlat holding it point forward made it almost perfect for skinning, cutting laces, fringes, and straps. Another hide tanner told me it works well for fleshing hides. (which makes sense, since the Innuits used the traditional style ulu's for skinning and prepping seals.) I call that design my Full Moon Ulu.
