Please recommend a good hatchet
« on: June 09, 2009, 09:50:00 AM »
I posted this somewhere else but figured this might be a more appropriate place. Please give me your recommendations on a good camp and hunting hatchet. Custom maker or a specific brand and model would be great. Right now I'm leaning toward Gransfors Bruk.

Thanks

Estwing 26" length.  Bulletproof.

Wetterling makes a nice one.  Google "Wetterling hatchet" and you'll get some reviews of them & others including GB. Larry

I found a old plumb with a broken handle drove into a tree while hunting elk about 15 years back. It's stamped on the side- Plum Victory.

A collector told me it was made during the second world war. It has been the best axe I've ever used. The difference I notice about it and the modern plumb or most other US axes/hatchets is that the blade area is very thin. The only modern hatchets I've seen like that are the swedish ones.

The steel in that old plum is way better than anything else I have also.

my family are all pipefitters, iron workers, welders, and carpenters and they all swear by eastwing hammers so the hatchets cant be bad.

I got my hands on an old surplus 3/4 axe a few years back. I think it was either german or swiss made. best camp axe i ever bought and it was cheap I think i paid 20 bucks for it.

I second the Wetterlings or Gransfor Bruks.  TOP notch Swedish hand forged axes and hatchets.... try bensbackwoods.com for various sizes.

Thanks everyone for the input. Mike Orton graciously sent me a granfors bruks wildlife hatchet and I am amazed. It is the best hand tool I've ever had the pleasure of using.
