New handle wood ( for me)
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:28:00 PM »
I had one of my saddle customers ask me to build a blade for him using his handle material. He'd spotted a couple leather tools I'd made with a lot of help from Doug & others on here.

He called this wood Red Shank. It's real hard and sure is pretty. He said he used it for firewood groing up in Southern Calif. At night the wood gives off different colors from minerals in it.

The stick he broght me had four scales in it so after a visit with Mr Doug on how to save the checked stuff I had a new furbearer blade & cat knife for myself outta the deal.

The bigger blade is his and the sheath matches his saddle. It has a set of cat tracks crossing the cantle & fender.

I Built a neck knife sheath for mine ( the Iron Bull pattern) Thought I'd see if I can stand a noose around my neck. It has a couple lion killed elk ivory's on each side in those knots.

Thanks Guys, had fun building these.
The blades are 01 tool steel. The guards are bronz scrapes from saddle horns. I hollow ground both blades and used a checkering file on the top of the blades for finger grip.

I wished the pics would show the true colors of the wood. it's pretty cool stuff. I wished the stick would have been big enough to bookmatch the grips, but just happy I got 4 scales out of it.

Nice wood, nice knives, nice sheaths.  All the way around.
Is that the real name of the wood, or is that "California slang"?

Dan, It's the real name of the wood. I was told it grows at 4000 ft and is the size of Mt. Mahogany. I'm guessing that it is protected on public ground and would have to come from private lands also like Mt Mahogany. RS
