Finishing Micarta
« on: August 28, 2009, 09:42:00 PM »
does anyone know the right way to finish micarta? I have tried but "burned" it. How do I finish micarta? can I use ca glue like the rest of my handle or is there a correct/incorrect way to do it?

Chris, micarta is easy to work with.  If you are using a belt grinder/sander, use fairly fresh belts. A used belt, too fast, will burn it.
Get fairly close to where you want it, then finish by hand.  Use files to shape.  Then sanding cloth strips to round and blend everything.  Work to finer sandpaper until you are happy with it.
Then, buff it if you are looking for gloss, using ordinary buffing compound.
If you want to leave it matte after sanding, then go over it with boiled linseed oil to bring out the color after sanding, but still leave it matte.

Again, Thanks Dan. I got 5 more of my little skinners done last night. All I need to do is finish the handle on one of the handles and polish the micarta and presto.

Dan has it down right! Just one more thing, make sure to work Micarta in a well ventilated area or use a good quality dust mask. The dust and fumes are highly toxic!
The doom of man...that he forgets!
