Hair Blower used as a fan?
« on: October 17, 2009, 02:13:00 AM »
I've nearly got my Forge finished, I picked up the remaining fittings today that I needed and the inswool and satanite is in the mail and should be here monday. The only other thing that I hadnt put to much thought into yet (busy week) was the fan. Has anybody used a cheap hair dryer set to "cool"?

I'll try to post some pics of the Forge tomorrow, thanks to help from Karl I really like the way it turned out!

Yes, that will work. For your type forge I would try to find a squirrel cage blower as you get around to it. It will allow you more range of air adjustment. Plus, it is quieter. Lin

You can get the cheapest bathroom vent fan      ( about 12.95 at Lowes )and just move a peice of metal over the hole to adjust flow. Very quiet sguirrel cage.

Lets give this a try.

12" well casing 3/8" thick with 2" legs on it to help it cool when I'm done using it. I ran black iron with a "T" reduced to 1/4" to accept the propane. I also plugged the propane line coming into the T with a cap drilled with an 1/8 bit. I ran a gate valve below where the fan will go to allow myself to adjust air flow easily. Also I used a 1-15 regulator and will have to see how that works. Let me know if you think this thing will work. (By the way, she isn't light!)

I would add a pressure guage off the regulator to make it easier to adjust the gas pressure.  They're $7.50 from Ellis knifeworks but should be able to get them any place that sells gas/welding stuff.  Looks nice!

With those legs, you should make a sheet metal cone to sit on top of the lid and paint it white with NASA in big letters down the side.   :)

All you need is a fan and you should be in business. I have essentially the same set up. Lin
