Router Table/Drum Sander Conversion?????
« on: January 26, 2008, 09:21:00 AM »
Being a tight wad,,, not really just broke all the time! I was thinking, could I not use my existing router table for a drum sander? If so, it would be used to grind some lam's or other shaping work.

I know the RPM's would probably burn the wood, but what if you placed a dimmer switch in the power supply line to raise and lower voltage and RPM's at the same time. Would the motor then not have the torch to do the heavey sanding?

Anyone done this???

Iam afraid that you would burn-up the Motor with the lower AC electricity current going thru the windings. Better idea would be to to hook up a drive shaft with a small dia. and larger dia. pulleys and a "V" Belt. Or look for a variable speed motor, and reastat switch.....ONE SHOT...  :)    :)    :)    :D

You don't want to use a dimmer switch on any motor it will cook the windings.

Certain routers with brushes can use a Router speed controler but it must have brushes. You definately don't want to use a dimmer switch or even a low wattage fan control.

There is a big difference between a shaper at 3000 rpms and a router at 14500 rpms or so. The idea of drum sanding works well though.
