Dogwood?
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:47:00 PM »
Finally got around to cleaning up the limbs that fell in our last ice storm and one was a fairly large dogwood.  I took a fairly straight piece about 5' long and about 6"-7" in diameter and cut it up into 8" lengths and then ripped those in half on the bandsaw.  The wood inside is really pretty with lots of pinkish and brown stripes.  I painted the ends with latex paint and put the pieces up in the loft above my shop.
Anybody ever use dogwood for handles?  Wonder how long it will take to dry out enough?  Think those pretty colors will stay after it dries?

Dogwood is an excellent, and very hard, hardwood. Do a search and you can find examples of items made with dogwood...it can be quite good looking.

Interesting!  I have often wondered about that!  I have some very old Dogwood trees and some day I will probably use them!  I would think my trees would even yeild a bow stave, they are that large!

Please post pics when the time comes!

My blacksmith buddies will use a piece of dogwood as a mallet head. Strong wood indeed.
