Need Inexpensive Blower
« on: April 02, 2010, 01:53:00 PM »
Well my forge is just about up and running.  But I need a blower for my forced air burner.  Blower will attach to 1 1/2 flange or I'll need to get another attachment configuration.  Does anyone know of an inexpensive/discount supply house where I can purchase one?  Thanks...Jeff

Doc, grainger.com has some for about 65.00 but i bet you find one cheaper. when i first got mine up and running i used a blower that i had for a air mattress. worked pretty good. but i have a 90 cfm now chocked down. i would like a 50 cfm.
you might give it a try

Got mine from   https://www.surpluscenter.com/

Don't remember exatcly which model it was.  It says 45cfm on the label and I still close it almost all the way with the aluminum sheet shutter thingy I made for it.

Nice set-up, Jeff.

I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Jeff,
Contact a heating company in your area. An inducer blower from an old 80% gas furnace would work for you. If you can't find one , I may have one stashed in the shop. We sometimes save old inducers for emergency use. PM or email if you can't locate one.

PGHKEN is right that is exactly what i have on my forge and it works great with a tin lid flow restrictor.  My father in law's brother is an AC guy and he has a ton laying around in between trips to the scrap yard i bet you could find a local ac guy who would glady sell you one super cheap or even give you one.

jeff this is tony bell , not to get into your business , but me and don fogg worked together on forced air forge design , and found out that if you use a small squirel cage blower mounted on the end of a straight pipe , mine is 1/1/4 in. by 12 in. long , then about 6 in. from forge insert 1/4 in. pipe nipple for gas to flow straight into pipe . this one dosen't restrict air flow by making that bend, causes turbulints (however you spell it) and i needed to slip a smaller size short piece in the end of the burner to get it tuned where the blue flame focused right to the end of the burner. you leave the blower blow all it can , and control the fire with volume of gas entering forge turn gas volume up till focus flame. mine will melt steel , probaly close to 2500 degrees. hope this helps

Tony,

Do you have a picture of that set up?

I picked up Don's three DVD set on damascus that he did at the ABS New England Metal Works symposium.  Just started it...great!

Thanks...Jeff

Jeff, If you go to Lowes or Home Depot they have heating duct booster fans in about three different cfms that are very easy to hook up.I use them on my wood stoves and they last forever.I think the last one was around $15.They are low cfm and if the out put is more than you want just put a light dimmer switch on it and you can have any speed you want.  Ben
