St. Judes - Collaboration of the Bladesmiths 2011???
« on: April 14, 2010, 08:44:00 AM »
I would like our Bladesmith members to consider a project for 2011 St. Judes Auction. You are all aware of many such projects within the Knife Maker community to raise funds. I know how much time and effort goes into your knives and it is hard to do all that and donate 100%.

But, if the effort/cost is shared/spread around it could be more feasible/possible. All we would need is someone to forge the blade, someone to grind and finish, someone to make handle and someone to make the sheath. I would be more than happy to coordinate it all if that is desired our once we have the team, or leave it to team to handle. Team would need to discuss type/style and materials so all agree, and establish some sort of schedule.

The end result would be one special knife with some World Class Trad Gang talent behind it. I have suggested a Bladesmith Collaboration for the reason that this keeps # of participants to a workable # and of course as this is the Mark of Distinction.

For those that are not Blade smith members please, do not take this as an insult in any way or form. We have many talented knife makers in the Trad Gang membership. Please remember that to object here is to raise funds for St. Judes.

So, how about some discussion on what everyone thinks.

You know I'm in, David.
We could even talk more about it at Compton's.

When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Sounds good Karl. I'm glad to see your keeping Comptons on your to do list. Love to share camp with you anytime. Thanks for helping, this will be a fantastic project if it goes way I'm imagining it going!

A work of art from any one of you is a very desirable item. Add to that: a Trad Gang effort for the kids and it becomes one very special knife indeed. We have all seen the Trad Gang Family's generosity when it comes to the kids! There is a warm and fuzzy feeling in it for all of us.

Now, that's creative thinking right there, Mel!
That's four already, David.
I don't see this as a big problem.

Thanks everyone!! We'll make this a big sucess by end of project. Mel thanks for stepping up as well. Help from the sidelines with material costs etc will go along way. I will offer to have Kenny Rowe make a special sheath if that's something our group would like to see. We'll discuss that all soon. The Trad Gang talent element is a crucial part of ingriedient.

Doc, as I stated in first post don't take this as any reflection on your work!! This project was intended to make it easier for our guys that make their living at this to be a part. We all know that it is very hard for one person to go start to finish with full donation of this size.

Besides, Doc your contributions to St. Judes are legendary as far as I'm concerned and we all know your always going to have something special in there. As for the union card - your a Mastersmith in the Doc De Forge category 150%!

Let give it a week to see if anyone else jumps in and then we will get the ball rolling. Meanwhile we need a project name so put your thinking caps on. Once we are rolling Terry has given go ahead for a private forum for team to work on. We'll keep a general Pow Wow thread running to keep everyone excited about the project. Hopefully a progress picture once in while to keep interest up. Thanks again everyone!

Hey I've got a coupon from Kenny Rowe for "custom leather work up to $75" that I won at a hammer-in last spring.  I'd be glad to donate it if Kenny will still honor it.

That's great Steve! Please hang onto it for short while and I'll give you a shout. That would go long way towards a fancy sheath. I'll direct my help towards other materials.

David, I think your contribution is fulfilled simply by being the 'spear head' on this project.
A knife sub-forum would be an awesome addition to the project.
Lin has already volunteered to forge the blade as soon as we can decide on what to do.

Karl, you guys are the Masters on this one, discussion between yourselves on what you'd like to do is great. By all means do so, this has to be fun for everyone involved. I'll contribute any way I can. If Mel and I can cover some costs etc looks like were ready to do so. So far we have sheath, talent and funds, let's see if anyone else jumps in.

Let's get a project name and I'll get that forum set up asap. What do you guys want to call this??? Project Bowie - Project Sharp - Project Bladesmith - A Sharp Surprise - Blade for Kids - IDEAS??

Maybe the project name should be designed such that it's a little more "media friendly"?
This could get promoted outside this landscape.
We have plenty of time - right?

Plenty of time. And I do agree this would be good material for an article and I'd be happy to pen one and submit it as well. So on that note here is a few more project name ideas - Damascus for Kid's or St. Judes Saber???
