Shaping antler ?
« on: May 10, 2010, 05:53:00 PM »
What tools do you guys use to shape antler with? I plan on buying a few helle blades from Dryad Bows and using deer antler for the handles and need to smooth up a few spots.

I follow Kuch's plan.  Always wear a respirator.  The horn grinds off and it has little hooks that catch in your lungs and can really mess you up.  Not a little rubber banded mask mind, a full on filtered insert painting type respirator is what you want.

If you have it fairly well locked into place, you will find files to be your best friend.
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.
