Bad weld failure
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:01:00 PM »
I was trying to do a feather pattern and thought I had a good billet, but when I started forging it into a blade it pulled apart near the middle.  Of course the bad weld couldn't have been near one of the ends where I could just cut it off and still have enough to make a blade.  Thought the pattern turned out neat tho.  Oh well, off to the scrap pile.

That is a berry cool design. Sorry about the bad weld

That's too bad. I wonder if it was hot enough in the middle yet when you cut it? Lin

The way it seperated, it looks like there was a bad weld the last tme I stacked it before the cut with the dull blade.  Not sure tho, just guessing.  I was following the steps on Toby Crocker's website, but his site isn't working right now.

There wasn't a lot of steel holding it together at the bad spot, just a bit at the spine of the feather.

I put the small end back in the vise and it broke along the weld there too, but it took a whole lot more force than the bad spot did.
