so it turns out all you have to do to find a post anvil is go visit a career blacksmith who doesn't throw anything away.  I just got back from visiting Ric Furer and I now have 5 pounds of triple refined shear steel (I went to learn how to make it) and a post vise.

Question... does anybody know anything about fixing these things up?  This one is has jaws that are pretty beat up which is no big deal as I can weld and dress em up if I find the need. And the leaf spring is missing.. but I can either forge one or just put in a coil spring. but the 'washer' that holds the screw receiver has disintegrated.  Looks like it might have been wood?  Anyway... just wondering if anybody has tried fixing or replacing that part of it... right now I've just hammered in wood wedges.

Scott, the spring is not too hard to make. Like you said, you forge it and put a spring temper in it. The washer, I thought was lead or a lead alloy, but I'm not looking at one right at the moment to be sure..

I think the big thing is how good is the screw.

The screw looks perfect to me... I don't see any obvious wear.   I've been using a lot since I posted this and it holds like grim death. I think she will be just fine. I'm not even bothering with a spring as it opens naturally anyway.
