I am working on this fork to complete a serving set for a housewarming gift and need a small piece of Padauk to match the slicer handle. When I made the slicer I used the only small piece of Padauk I had not realizing I would need more to complete a set. Because I liked the slicer so much I decided to pound a serving fork out of a 1/2" piece of stainless round stock I have and may not have enough wood to finish the set. Where are you buying your handle wood? Or, possibly, does anyone have a small piece in the 4x1x1" range they want to sell or trade to me?
I am pleased with how the fork is turning out for my first try at this. I did not split it in the traditional manner because I was afraid to get the stainless too hot. I split it with a cut off wheel so the fork is not completely forge built. I just did not know what the heat would do to the stainlessness??? Because I do not need to heat treat or temper the fork I thought it would be more practical to go the stainless route. Anyone know how forge heat effects stainless? More pics to follow as I get the set finished up.
