Longjohns - what is the best?

I have used the military polypropylene for quite a while, but would like to grt something better! I looked at Smartwool, but their heaviest weight is on the light side. It would work in cool conditions or to help layer. Also looking at thr Ulfrotte That 3Rivers carries, it comes in two weights, which appears to ideal to use the two weight either seperately or in layers depending on conditions.

Are there any other merino or other types of really good longjohns out there?

Justin Charles merino wool. Ulfrotte from Cabelas doesn't hold a candle to these. my .2 cents warm in Iowa

Steve I bought the expedition weight stuff. So wouldn't have to layer up to bulky. It's better than anything else i wasted money on.. got it where you said too.. Top was 100.00 and bottoms 100.00 twice as better than Ulfrotte I bought from Cabelas at 85.00

Roger that...the Ulforette (I can't ever spell that) is real good for hiking and working up a sweat like elk hunting.

Otto I bought the 400 gram also. But after wearing it a while i could see light throught them very easy. Billy I was turned off of the polartec for a base layer because of what i read on The Justin Charles Site about synthetics verses wool. When it gets really cold i found advice from a mountain climber and bought a Northface polartec 300 jacket to put over my wool and then outer layer a lightweight breathable windproof rain proof shell..Lot less bulk and lots of dead air space. I did find out that if i wore a thin x-scent with silver fibers against my skin than the other layers i was warmer than ever sitting for four hours in very cold weather..

Thanks guys for your comments. I had forgotten about the Justin Charles stuff. Looked it up and looks good.

Most of the time here in Louisiana you don't need a lot, that is why I am looking at two different weights, but some times the temps get into the twenties and teens. May not be as cold as some of your temps, but the humidity and cold in January and into February can be tough to sit long periods in a tree stand.

From what I am seeing above is that the JC stuff is best. Where did ya'll get yours from. I did look at the retailers list, but if you have recommendations I would give them a call first.

I use a light to medium weight poly longjohn to wick away moisture and 200 polar fleece over it with something to block the wind if its windy. Very warm combo, sometimes to warm.

Is the Justin Charles midweight stuff about like the 400 weight Ulfrotte in terms of thickness weight etc...(before you could see through it)?

don't know about midweight, bought the heavy expedition weight.

Check out  www.medalist.com  They make some great base layer and the price is reasonable.
