I am forging them from a Ford truck coil spring so after a few trips through the power hammer to get them close I us my belt sander to get them to shape. The slicer is about 1/16th at the handle and the pearing knife will go thinner. Thinner is better in the kitchen knife catagory but I get scared when I get them too thin that they will warp(or worse yet) crack during heat treat. We will see - have to take a little risk to get what I want out of the knife.
