Things got too easy Billy. I spent 27 of my years trying and making things the old way. I also used to run a historical style blacksmith shop here at home, planted my own flax and took it through the processes and spun my own linen, worked with the State Historical Society and Museum, wrote numerous articles about the Ioway Territory in the 1700's & 1800's. I mainly researched and wrote about the Sac & Fox Indians and how it related with the early Fur Trade. Located the sites of 5 18th Century fur trading posts on the Des Moines River in a 250 mile run. Made my own Historical style musical instruments and even wrote a song about the Des Moines River. I'm not really bitter about it but I finally realized that no one around here really cared what our History really was. Most people just want to see the hype and glory not the daily living aspect of our Past. Anyhow I had better not get into that.

I've got family back through the Ojibwe Nation, with a French fur trader mixed in; did some sightseeing/research in the museum in St.Ignace,MI. Cool place.
Seems the day to day information that I search for is the hardest to get...
Folks here usually nail it with their help, though.
Thanks for the help, all ;and inspiring pics, Court.

"Thanks Chuck, I quite often wear a breechclout also."

For which we are all duly grateful.

The day to day is what I crave in any discussion of the old days. When reading books by Eckert, or articles from Muzzleloader magazine, these little details flesh out the events, add motivation to the actions of the characters, and reveal the might of their deeds. I would like to know a lot more, but have limited time for research these days. Simple things like food prep (Boiled chocolate?) and weatherproofing mocs often get short shrift.

I would love to see a Primitive Skills subforum in the How-To forum here. Your articles, Bowmac, would hold much interest for me.

Killdeer if you use the 18th Century style accepted Chocolate get ready to have one of the best caffeine rushes of a lifetime. I just throw a chunk in my copper boiler with some water. After heating well and stirring a bunch wah-law instant caffeine. As for waterproofing moc's there are plenty of modern methods available. I still prefer Bear lard that I renderd. But then I'm not always right in the head. As for the breechclout I prefer linen to wool or braintan. It is a little gentler on the body.

Killy I enjoy Eckert as well, think it was you that mentioned hunting with Simon Kenton.
Those are the kinda of stories with lessons of old in 'em.
Things like; shallow hole, build small fire, cover yer'self with blanket, squat over hole and wait for 'hairy food' to wander by....
