Matching knife to bow?
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:33:00 AM »
I have a new Tall Tines of the following look. Charcoal Diamondwood with Walnut stripe. I am going to make me a knife to match, but am trying to decide just how to configure the woods on the handle. Have you guys done this? Got any pictures of the knife? Here's the riser.

I sure like the looks of those two woods together.  I've not done a knife like what you're talking about, but have seen several.  Some had one wood up front (almost like bolsters) with he second making up the rear 2/3 of the handle.  I'd be curious to see yours with two pieces of the darker diamondwood with a small stripe of Walnut on an angle somewhere in between.  You could even use some black liner material on either side of the Walnut like it appears to have on your riser.

What kind of blade you thinking about making?  Whatever direction you go, I'll put money up that says it'll look great.   :)   Thanks again for chatting this morning-off to the airport in a bit.

Lin, right now I'm doing a knife of Stabilized Myrtle to match a guy's custom guitar!
I've also been working with Chad Holm of Holm Made Bows to collaborate on some bow/knife combos, but have yet to take that concept to fruition.
I hope you keep us informed on your progress on that project 'cause I could sure use some ideas!

I have made a few to match.  I talk to the bowyer and get the sight window cutout from that bow or a matching bow.   You can run the stripe diagonally across the handle, full length of the handle, or do a bolster, handle combo.  One trick it to use a full tang on the knife and adjust the handle shape to show the wood combo to it's fullest.

I messed up the pins so I kept this one.

BMA posted a thread last December on a bunch of knives he made in my shop with a few bow cut out handles.  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=110;t=002898

Brian of TT archery gave me some of the cut off blocks, so I thought I would try to make one to keep. I really appreciate the suggestions and the photos. I have time to look at more before I make it so dont be shy. Thanks, Lin

I have a suggestion...if your bow wasn't so pretty, then your knife wouldn't have to be either.  In that case, you'd have an easy time matching 'em up!     :biglaugh:    Can't wait to see what you come up with.  :)

Lin,
I hesitate to show you this as it was one of my early knives that I tried to match up to a friend's Morrison riser.  I'd like to have the knife back to at least re-grind it   :knothead:   Jeff

Lin, I made my pastor friend a Christmas gift knife to match the bow he had me make for him. His bow is grey actionwood, ebony and bacote. I used the same woods for his knife.

Hey Lin,  I had Norm Johnson send me some wood from the Blacktail he built for me.  Cocobolo and Bocote.  I sent it to Doug Campbell for a knife I ordered.  Here was the result:

KHalverson put a number of knives together for me but I can only find pictures of these two. The coco/bacote is my favorite. I dod alot of I-Beam risers and he will turn the cut-off on edge to use the contrasting wood as a liner of sorts. That is how the walnut/maple is done.
can't wait to see what you come up with Lin.
Also check this thread out for another knife set up with scrap wood.Just put your sunglasses on first.  :goldtooth:

Tim Meigs saved me scraps and I made my scales to match the riser. Aim a novice compared to you all, but I like it
