Carbon or Woodies or aluminum???
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:11:00 PM »
Hello,

I was wondering what would be the best arrow setup for a 50#ish Selfbow that i made. I guess i want to know which arrow is better. I not sure the spine difference in carbon vs woodies vs. aluminum. Any info would greatly be enjoyed.

Thanks, Chad

for me i like carbons, yah they are less "traditional" but less work is involed in them hardly any up keep , and if you are hard on stuff as i am carbons stand up to just about anything.  but my suggestion is to get a couple of each and try them till you know what you want.

I dont personally have much good to say about aluminum.  and if your looking to get max performance out of flight carbons spines are to far inbetween. i would say wood would be the route to go. You can ajust your spine in smaller incraments. They aren't as costly as carbon (if you loose one, break it, or just want to try another spine. Plus i find wood to be more personal. You can create beautiful works of art with wood if you feel inclind to do so. So my opnion is wood.

All wood bow right? There must be a reason for that archery wise so wood arrows are only natural. Stone points too? Why not.

Wood all the way...and I'm guessing you'll enjoy building your own arrows given that you built your bow!  There are many fine arrow building supply vendors on the trad gang sponsor list.  Give them a call or e-mail and they'll get you going in the right direction.

Good luck.  Scott

I vote for carbon, tolerances are way better than just few years ago and a dozen carbon will outlast 3 dozen wood if ya shoot a lot, ecsp. stumping and such. with the advent of different weight inserts and points it is fairly easy to get great arrow flight out of carbons as well. A bow will shoot only as good as the arrow. Shawn

Now, I love carbon as much as the next guy. Got rid of every aluminum in the house, and woods are always put aside when crunch time comes around. But I really have to agree with Chuck's statement...

There is no wrong answer.  Shoot what you like the best.  I prefer woodies just because they are a pleasure to make and I really enjoy making them.  Carbons are the most consistant and durable just not near as pretty or fun to make.  But hey its your bow so shoot what makes you happy.

You put all that time into creating your own bow (at least it takes me a long time), why not make your own arrows.  Rivercane, rosebush, or whatever grows near you.  If you enjoyed the success of your bow, imagine the pride that comes with the rest of the tackle.  IMHO

Carbon if you're a horrible shot 8^).  Aluminum if you want consistency 8^).

I love accuracy, but I would use wood arrows with an all wood bow.  Nothing scientific about it, just the romance of it all 8^).

I only shoot aluminum & wood, don't like carbon, tried them for years, still can't get them to fly right, had 100s given to me over the years to try, used them up as model airplane spars.  Bill G.

I don't believe in limiting myself to one option. So I shoot all three.  I have a bucket slam full of arrows.  Woodies are my favorite to build and shoot; douglas firs are so pretty stained and sealed.  Aluminums were my hunting standby this year, but I tend to dent a few each month, so eventually I won't buy anymore unless it's a great deal.  Am tuning in carbons for an upcoming hog hunt because they're a little faster and they don't dent.  I have finally indoctrinated myself to believe that carbon arrows are wood, too, just not as pretty. I prefer the arrow buffet approach. tge

As G.Fred said in one of his books, "You either like wood, or you do not," or something to that effect.  I like wood.  Because it is available in a wide range of spines and weights, it's easy to find just the right combination for your bow.  They're beautiful to look at, fly well, and in an emergency make excellent fire starter.  Can't do that with carbon or aluminum. I really like the feel and look of wood arrows, but I prefer shooting carbon, as they're easier to build and maintain, and a lot more versatile.    :bigsmyl:
