Camp Knife gone Astray...pictures added
« on: September 22, 2011, 10:44:00 PM »
Well the weather has cooled off here in New England and the forge has been fired up again.  Got a few skinner/capers done so I thought I'd do up a nice camp knife.  I traded mine for a partial payment on a bow at Denton in July.

Anyway I kept forging & re-forging this blade, Not exactly a camp knife...Not sure exactly what it is   :knothead:   But I think it will do a lot of work well just Not a Specially Type Knife...tippit

10 1/2 inches OAL, blade length 6 inches from an old piece of file that had already produced another blade...7 inches long before forging.  It's in the oven so I'll post a picture tomorrow...tippit

Out of oven and cleaned up.  First I thought I'd pass on how I judge my blades as I'm forging.  I continually hold my blade up to the sky so the out line is silhouetted.  This allows me to see proportions better.

Pseudo camp/hunter tempered.

Cleaned up but what to do with it?  For me it's too large for a belt/carry hunter compared to my present carry.  Plus it's not exactly a meat processing blade.  I guess I got caught up with the silhouette as I was forging it.  Everything looked clean and I lost my focus on what I was trying to accomplish.  It's pretty but it may just end up in the box of unfinished blades...tippit

You should send it to an aspiring knifecrafter.  I think I know a guy...

Handle that knife up and call it a Zombie chopper or camp knife.   I like the blade shape,  kind of a Bowie, Bird and Trout combo.  I give my screw up as gifts to buddies or use them as trades.   You could hold it and put it in the St. Judes auction too.

Nice example of tempering color. I assume it's 1095 steel.

Lin,
It's an old file so don't know exactly what the steel is.  The first knife that came out of this file holds an edge real well.  That one took me three temperings to find the right combo.  This one was pretty easy using the same recipe.

It wasn't so much a screw up as I was trying to show how I view the end knife by looking at the blackened silhouette during early stages of forging.  I liked the profile but forgot I was trying to build a different knife  :knothead:

It looks like a beauty to me!  I know what you mean starting out with an idea and ending with something different!

This thread is timely for me, I heat treated/tempered three knives today and thought I drew them back too much, the colors look close to your knife.

I hope you decide to finish it!

That looks fantastic, love the profile. Looks like a lot of work could be done with that knife!!
