Zebra's sister Rose
« on: September 23, 2011, 03:10:00 PM »
Here are the two completed knives I made for my brothers using the "Sportsman Blade" from Jantz.  The zebrawood knife is for my older brother, who is in the Knights of Columbus.  The rosewood knife is for my younger brother, a Christian.  Each has a cross filed into the pommel as you can see in the second pic.  Both are pinned with 1/8" stainless pins, finished with Tru-Oil.  I hope to have the second sheath finished this weekend so I can deliver both packages on opening day next Saturday.  Thanks for looking... again  ;)

I thought I'd show any other newcomers that it doesn't take a ton of money to get started in making handles.  Here's what I'm using to make these knives.

My Sander, $80 from Harbor Freight:

My "drill press", $45 press, $80 Dremel

The filework I do mostly with a Nicholson triangle file and a Nicholson "mini file kit".  I finish the wood with 220 grit sandpaper and my God-given hands and 3-4 coats of Tru-Oil.

Thanks, guys.  I handed them to my brothers yesterday after an unsuccessful opening day of bow season.  Their spirits were somewhat lifted after that.   :)
