Son's chefs knife

Finally got the knife back to take some pictures. This is one I made for my older son's graduation from culinary arts school about 15 years ago. Forged the blade of W1 and N203E at Robin Hudson's shop when he was on the eastern shore of Maryland. It was supposed to be a ladder pattern that went a bit astray. Think it still fits well to the Chinese character of the knife. Handle is amboyna burl and buffalo horn. The box is obviously fiddleback maple. I forgot the old caution to forge thick and grind thin. Forged it right down to the finished dimensions. When quenched, the edge turned to crepe paper, but Rob tapped it all straight again for me before it cooled down. Before I could finish the knife we moved from MD up here to MI and I had no shop set up. I had a hand drill clamped down to a sawhorse in the driveway and was using a 6" buffing wheel for the final polish. It got ripped out of my hands and I lost about 1/16" from the tip in the concrete drive. Other than that, it was fine so I re-shaped the tip and said "Thank you!".

very jealous i wanna try one again my first attemp was a complete failure!!! kinda goes to that forge thick, grind thin thing. oh well practice makes perfect. you did a great job he will love it.

He did love it. That was his graduation present 15 years ago from culinary arts school. I was just working under a deadline and never got a chance to photograph it before the graduation. We went out to Keystone in Colorado for the graduation and he got a good quality German chefs knife from the school. He gave it to me and kept mine. Nice to know your son appreciates you, even when he's old enough to know better
