Montana bird n trout knife (sheath pics added)
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:09:00 PM »
I know things are supposed to be bigger down here in Texas but I have found some exceptions. Got to do some trout bummin' up in big sky country back in the 70's. Sure nothing down here like those fine fish.
My buddy Doug Campbell sent me some Montana Big Horn sheep horn, amongst other treasure, saying I had a "fertile mind" and might be able to use it. Kind of thinking he was saying I had snakes in my head.
Had my friend Rainy Raven forge this blade to my spec's from 1095. I mortised it into Osage. Couple 1/4" brass pins in bronze flanged bushings ( spare nose landing gear door hardware ) 1/4" barstock copper guard. Pinned the horn on with 3/32" bronze.
My dog, Osage, thinks we need to go arrow some hogs and give it a try. Looking forward to making the scabard.

Great looking knife. The birds and trout must be a lot bigger in Texas if you need a knife that big for them! You should definitely take the dogs advice and give it a work out on some hogs.

Charles,
I think fertile like a "farm field" as your ideas keep popping up all over.  Nice looking handle.

So that is a wonderful knife, is that a one of a kind or one that could be purchased?

I would love to have a knife like that on my hip during elk season.

Let me know PLEASE.

I love the design!  simple but elegant. Very rustic at the same time and has a very useful design.

Love it!

Damn what a fine looking knife. Id go "cowboy" with the sheath for that. Im sure it'll be just as creative as your more primitive inspired masterpieces.

Thanks everyone. SecondSeason I sent you a PM.

Izzy, I had in mind a semi horizontial under arm cross draw with a shoulder strap. No rawhide this time, maybe a snakeskin inlay, copper rivets.

Kept the sheath simple, works well oriented in this manner for horseback.

Snakewood, I find myself captivated with every knife you post.  You somehow meld high end with primitive in an elegant and utilitarian form.  Really spectacular work.    :clapper:
