Blacksmith/Farriers Knife
« on: June 24, 2012, 09:18:00 PM »
I forged this at the Historic W.F. Moran shop recently from an old farriers rasp.  Came out at 7 3/4" OAL 3 3/4" blade.  I had to quench it twice the first try the file bit, the second quench did the trick!  The handle is skinny, despite that it feels good in the hand!  I forged a flaired finger guard.

That looks like you had a little fun!  I looks a lot like a snake skin pattern...the left side being the belly of the snake, the right side being the back of the snake.

I like it Steve, you can call it the humpback snake knife.

Real nice - even a litle hamon showing up.  Did you grind off any of the file teeth before you started forging to get that polished blade to not show any sign of them?

Thank you all for the comments, Bobby I did not grind any before forging, actually I tried to keep as much of the file texture on the blade flats as possable.

That turned out great - I seem to get a little more of the file teeth showing through if I don't grind first.  Looking closer you can see a double temper line hamon from you "double Dip" really cool knife.

Hello Tom!  How are you Sir? I think it may be one you gave me.  Thank you!

That's just a small piece of the file, I forged a nice Southwest Bowie using most of it!

Regards,

Steve
