Small Bowie
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:00:00 PM »
This Bowie has a 5 1/2 inch blade of carbon steel. The guard is 416 ss and the handle is natural stag. Just shy of 10 1/2 inches. I just finished it.

That is a beautiful knife.  Simple (relatively speaking!   :)   ) yet perfectly executed.  I love seeing those wonderfully straight sanding marks, and the guard, particularly the upturn at the top, is a nice touch.

Well that is fantastic!  I must say that is one of my favorites of yours.  Then, your latest is usually my favorite!

Great details

I second Ray's comment. The mild S guard is a study in flawless execution and adds to the flow without drawing the eye and disrupting the lines.  Very nice.

Thank you for your comments. I'll try to have a better picture soon.

A sculpted guard and stag is not as simple as wood to get right. I expect to remove a small amount of bark from the stag right at the guard, but want to preserve the majority for it's character. So, I had to know just how thick my guard would need to be and then thin the stag slabs from the inside so their total thickness would be very slightly thicker than the guard's final thickness. How confusing is that!?

Here's the blade with the shoulders filed and the scales laying beside it.

I have to say that is one beautiful knife. I like that style of blade but would like one in a 4 inch blade, easier to use but fantastic work Lin.

I think that size would be more usable than the standard bowie. Best of both worlds.
