A new one in progress (pro pics on pg 2)

416 stainless cut and ready. The bronze will have to wait to be used later.

After forging to get it closer to shape. Everything is bigger to allow for final shaping.

Here are the fittings roughed out. Now I have to slot and finish them. That might be another day.

I have the guard on. The front of the guard is finished and I will touch up the sides after I get the ferrule on. Right now the ferrule is rough but fit on. I'll take it (the ferrule)apart and work on it this evening if all goes as planned. You might notice that the bronze spacers are left proud. I intend to file notches in them all the way around. Being proud will make them more reflective of light.

I thought I'd snap a pic of the back of this guard. I will often inlet the middle a few thousandths to make sure the outside of the fittings are tight. They will bear on the outside instead of rocking on a piece of trash or spec of something.

I just set the ferrule on the guard after doing my best to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Thanks guys. I got a little farther along in the last two evenings and should finish it this weekend. Here it is with the wood and butt cap fit. All I have to do is shape the rough parts and make a finial to hold it all together.

At this point I stopped and drilled and put allignment pins in the butt though the bronze and into the wood. that way I can start shaping everything and rely on it going back like it was. This is just after I marked the front and back "circumference" of the fittings. I leave the wood proud and carefully work it inward till I get what I want. Still a long way to go, but you can see where I'm headed.
