Just Finished...
« on: January 24, 2013, 11:04:00 AM »
Here is one I've had in mind for some time. It was a challenge but a lot of fun to build at the same time. Guess you would call it a Coffin Handled Bowie. 8 1/8" of Crushed "W" Damascus blade, Damascus fittings, a mortised Ebony (I think) handle with 1/16" stainless pins and a vine file worked  Titanium spacer in the handle. Hope to show it to a few folks in AR next month. Thanks for looking.

Can Lin and I borrow that to play with?    :saywhat:

I guess its ok, you know, if you're into well designed damascus blades, fancy guards, pretty filework, high grade wood, and quality craftsmanship.  :goldtooth:

You guys are really making me want to drive up to Ar next month.

That's one of the slickest coffin-handles knives I've seen in a great while.  The guard and concave butt really set it off.

Doug, that's a beauty. Really like the blade and the filed spacer in the mortised handle. Great job all 'round.

Never mind driving to AR next month, I'm considering flying in from the "great white north" just to meet some of you guys and see your work in person....!!
cheers, Dale

Thanks guys, been off celebrating a first birthday with our Grand Daughter, some things are just more important than knife making...   ;)

Karl, you and Lin can play with it all you want till it's sold...   ;)

Hope to get another one or two done before the AR Show. Any that can should try and get there, this is my first time there but I've heard it's a good one.

Best to all from Montana!

I have my doubts Karl and Lin will get much play time with that. I suspect it'll leave the table pretty fast!

I love everything about that knife, Doug. Coffin style handles are not usually my favorite, but this one is about to change my mind. I absolutely LOVE the blade and guard design. The knife looks like it should have been carried by John Wayne in one of his bigger-than-life western roles. The Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is here in Oklahoma City, and there is quite a collection there of knives, guns and other items (some of them having been donated by John Wayne and his heirs), in addition to the art. I don't think there is a single knife in that entire museum collection that is as outstanding as yours or one that more befits the genre of western craftsmanship. Today's cowboys and bladesmiths, like you, don't give up anything to those of days gone by. Your Damascus steel is some of the best I have ever seen, and seems to be getting better all the time.

Then there is the really important stuff -- grandbabies!!!!! Glad you are enjoying your sweet little girl. We are only 4 1/2 months behind you, and our granddaughter is a bundle of joy too. Have a fun birthday.

Great knife Doug!  Where shall I start...

First off I love coffin handles and I like the way you concaved the end.

I prefer fine patterened Damascus, so that works for me.  And the guard is very interesting and the way it is abit shorter on one side.

Very nice!

Doug,

I remember my son Michael's first birthday when he ended up sticking his foot in the birthday cake instead of blowing out the single candle. Yes, it was messy -- and he was spoiled -- but we couldn't hand him off to anyone because we were his parents. Now his daughter is fast approaching her first birthday. How quickly our lives pass!

I do greatly admire that beautiful knife -- along with the half dozen of your knives that I am blessed to own.

Take care my friend,

Allan
