Potomac Forge Light Weight Utility (Pro Photo added)
« on: May 14, 2013, 05:08:00 PM »
Here is my latest, my last stock removal project for the year.  Made from a antique sawmill blade 4 1/2" blade 9 1/4 OAL edge quenched and vinegar etch exposing the temper line.  Stained curly maple handle with a linseed oil finish, silver wire inlay and some stippling on the handle edges.
My first try at relief carving.

This handle really feels good in the hand.

The influence is sure obvious there, but with a different personal touch.

I think WFM Jr would like it.

Thanks for the kind comments!

Ray, after I inlayed the wire I stained the entire handle with Fieblings Dark brown leather dye, then used a rotery tool with a small ball cutter and textured until all the brown was gone, then applied several coats of Fieblings black dye with a small brush.  No sandpaper or files, then I soaked the handle over night in Boiled Linseed oil by filling a small jar with oil.  Takes several days for the linseed oil to dry, that's a pain.

Most people think I inlayed some other material into the handle.
