Tallahassee Forgers?
« on: August 06, 2013, 02:30:00 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm looking to start out in forging, but have no where to get an anvil. I can't believe there aren't any scrap yards that sell. and nothing on craigslist. If anyone out there has a large hunk of steel, I'd love to take it off your hands, I can't offer much $$, but I would be more than willing to work off the extra. yard work/shop hand, or something.(So sorry if this kind of post is against posting rules! I only saw rules about pics, so I'm not sure.)

Anyone willing to let me sit in on a few forge sessions? I'm willing to drive up to an hour away, I'm in NW Tallahassee, but I'd prefer not to go all that far out. I'm sure having an extra pair of hands around the shop couldn't hurt. I have a fairly quick learning curve. And I have a pretty good grasp on the basics already, just need to start learning the finer points of it. as well as the jargon.     :D

Thanks for your time,

JL

Look at the American Bladesmith society page and look at their list if members. There are members out there in FL. Get in touch with a few of them and see if they know others around you.

Are you primarily wanting to forge knives or general blacksmith work???

A couple good sites to make contacts are Iforgeiron.com  and Anvilfire.com

thanks guys, I'm still looking around. I did find some guys in the American Bladesmith society, just sent a few emails. probably be a few days til I hear back, but I'm feelin a little more positive now. thanks for the tips. I am mostly interested in forging knives, but I'll take whatever I can. I'm sure the knowledge is somewhat transferable.
