Fighter {clayless hamon}
« on: October 04, 2013, 08:45:00 PM »
Here is a fighter I just finished up last week. This was a custom ordered piece based on a fighter I did at the beginning of the year. The customer gave me the freedom to make some tweaks and improvements to the design.
The blade is appx 10" of W2 and has a clayless hamon that came out pretty cool. There is a ton of activity that doesn't' show in the pics. The sheath is hand stitched and built to last as long as the knife. I have only done a couple hidden tang knives, so they are always a bit challenging, but I am pretty pleased with how it came together.
Thanks for looking!

Great looking knife and sheath Ben

I guess it is what you are use to doing but I find hidden tang knives easer than full tang!

That is a fine specimen.  Clayless hamon?  Do you achieve that with temp control by not letting the entire blade reach critical, or with the quench method?

Thanks very much gentlemen!

The hamon happens when the thickness of the spine (In this case 3/8"+) retards the cooling rate of the steel enough for it not to harden. There was a bit of temperature control involved as well, but it was heated in my kiln and fully quenched in Parks 50.

I really like what you've done here.
Great package.
