here piggy, piggy......
« on: December 16, 2013, 09:47:00 AM »
Bowie forged from 3/8" thick 1095FG, blade is 10" x 1-3/4" x 5/16" thick.  Overall length is 15", handle is 5" with lots of contour/curve for secure grip.

Guard is blued steel, handle is Katlalox (Royal Ebony).

I built this for a hog hunter, but he has gone MIA...  but hope it still gets to be used as a "hog knife".  I made sure there was plenty of contour in the handle for secure push/pull, as well as having plenty of guard and a long, lean pointy tip.  Ive had better results when sticking with a lower tip as you can see this one is fairly low as indexed to the handle.

Still needs a bit of touch up in the pics, but here are some from the cell phone-

thanks all! sure wish I could get some good pics of the Katalox wood, it is dark brown/black but has some "curl" to it, very cool wood.

I like that material, Matt.
I'm going to do a little looking around.

Karl, try Cook Woods.  I bought some really big blocks from them that were excellent in every way.

Well designed for the purpose. I have to agree with the lower tip for thrusting.

Very nice.  I like the low tip, makes for a very sleek looking knife.  I don't have enough experience with big knives to have any input about how well the different tip designs thrust, but the simple physics of it make sense.  I see a lot from Lin that have the low tip like that as well and have always liked the way they look.  Is the clip sharpened?  It seems that that would also increase penetration, but a lot of guys don't feel comfortable with a sharp edge facing up toward their face.

I may have the opportunity to do a larger bowie for a guy the first part of next year, and I'll probably go with a more low tip design than the one I posted on here a week or so back.  If I do, it'll be far beyond anything I've done so far, in both size/design, and the type of finish work required.  I've explained all of this to the guy and suggested some of you guys that have more experience with what he wants, but he still seems interested in getting me to do it since he knows me personally.  I told him if he decides to go forward with it, I'll do the best I can and if it doesn't work out the way he wants, I'll keep it for myself and he won't be out any money.  So, I may be coming to you, Lin, Karl, and so on for advice along the way.

Matt,  the clip is sharp, but only to the point of the edge "meeting" and then I buff it.  So it will cut, but has a fairly abrupt angle.  It does help quite a bit in penetrating though.

On Bowies that I build for more self defense type applications (yes they are out there),  the clip is sharper, and I drop the grind line down so I can get a better angle etc....

Sounds cool.  As much as I love knives, not sure if I want to rely on one for self defense, but pig huntin with one couldn't help but be fun.

Very beautiful Matt. I am sure it will find a good home. I wish I were in a position to own it. I would love to have one of your big knives.

My wife can't understand why I would want a knife made by somebody when I make some also, women, go figure.

Thanks for sharing.

Chris
