Up to now, I've only "handled" blanks and rebuilt old knifes. I have a steel cutting band saw, 4X36 Belt/disk sander combo, drill press and now scored this little Shop Smith 1" strip sander for $50. It's hooked up to a 1/3hp Sears craftsman motor. Hopefully with the right belts, I can do some work with it on stock removal. Just have to find some belts now. I'm sure I'll have many questions. I'll try to search for my answers from previous threads before asking a question that was answered already.

Your best tool is between your ears. But these sure help, don't they?

You might find that rpm a bit fast to retain good control. It depends on the machine of course. If that shop smith is balanced out good, it might be ok. But you will have to keep water handy and use fresh belts any time you grind after heat treat.

We are certainly not as "uppity" as some forums are. If you have a question - ask it.

That oughta do it.  I definitely would be careful with the higher RPMs.  I built a 2x72 grinder with a 4 step pulley system.  I learned real quick that the bottom two speed settings were as fast as my skill level could handle.  If I sped it up with a fresh 36 grit belt or even a 60, I could ruin a blade in a hurry.
