Toelke/Tippit Hunting Combo
« on: July 24, 2015, 01:41:00 PM »
Dan just sent out my new Pika 54" 40#@28 along with a few riser scraps & black glass. The riser wood is highly figured curly/quilted maple. It's difficult to truly appreciate how translucent the grain/curls really stand out in a picture. Knife is hand forged 52100, OAL 9 inches with a 4 1/2 inch blade. Hopefully I can add some red coloration this fall...tippit

That's nice Jeff. Do you mind sharing how you applied the black glass? I see the spacers but perhaps you can quench my curiosity.

Lin,
Very low tech...I took a squared up chunk of the curly maple, cut off two sections, and re-glued/re-squared everything with the black glass as spacers.  Then split it for slabs.  I drilled the slabs up square so my pins would come out the same on each side, glued, and shaped handle.  The trick was gluing all the pieces back square so the grain followed through each piece on all three sides.

Good job. That's exactly what I was wanting to know. The time and effort you took made the knife even more interesting as well as customizing it to the bow.
