A new project for me
« on: August 06, 2015, 08:49:00 AM »
Something a bit different for me to do - Turkish Twist.
Lots of work, and most of the billet ends up on the floor!
I forged a billet of 48 layers and then drew it out into five equal lengths.
I'm ready to weld up the bar today.

When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Now I know why Jerry Rados is always grouchy.

It's just a whole lot of work.

When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Everything - most everything - is just fine.
In fact, it's turning out so well that I'm thrilled.
I got ready to harden it yesterday and was pre-setting my heat treat oven for tempering and something wasn't right with the controller.
After a little investigation, the circuit board is corrupt, so I had to order a new one.
I decided to not harden the knife until I get that back up and running on Saturday.

Not sure if you saw my comments on Facebook, but in the heat of passion - being my first time - I twisted all of the bars the same direction on the first billet.
So, I had to make another entire billet, forge everything down and twist it all the other direction.
The good news, of course, is that I now have enough Turkish for another knife.
I even made one of my small billets, but ended up with a full 9" fighter that I had to smash down to stay under 2" wide.
I'm excited.

My buddy - Bobby Matherly - will be over Saturday when I harden it.
I'll get some pictures then.

I had a customer off Trad Gang stop by on his way to Canada for a fishing trip.
We wanted to see the Turkish so I did a quick etch on the unhardened blade.
It leaves a little to the imagination right now, but you'll get the idea.

That is awesome!  I am really drawn to that cross pattern you have running up along the edge.
Love that portable I-beam cart you have also!

I truly am quite pleased with how she came out:

Beautiful. Something truly different from any pattern I've seen.
