Little Surprise Damascus--Finished
« on: October 04, 2015, 03:45:00 PM »
I recently was scrounging through my throw away box of blades when I found a couple pieces of Alabama Damascus that I picked up off the cheap table at the Blade Show when Doug got his JS.  I was real surprised to see a cool pattern coming out of my quench tank!  I've done a few random Damascus billets but this is just pretty on a little 6 1/2" necker.  This little guy is just quenched and I haven't even tempered & hand finished yet...tippit

Randy,
It's flat ground with a convex edge and a false top edge.  Here it is tempered, finish grind, and hand finished to 320.  I think I need to etch a little darker.  Now to decide on handle material??  tippit

Steve,
We are in MA.  Checked in with neighbor, our farm sits on top of a hill with sandy soil so we are in luck.  Also checked with Benjy in Columbia and Duck Butt in Charleston...Luckily they are doing OK with lots of water around them but still dry.

Big Brother is the blade forged from the larger Alabama Damascus billet.  I finished temper, final grind with convex edge & false top edge, hand finished to 320, and etched today.  The blade is 6 inches with AOL of 10 1/2 inches.  I think both billets cost $15 total.  I should have bought more  :banghead:   as my Damascus is pretty dulled compared to these two...tippit
