Shinin Times Bowie
« on: November 04, 2016, 09:26:00 AM »
First off, I'd like to show you a couple of pieces of this knife as it started. I have been trying a new technique to mix of methods to get to my results. I call it "intermediate forging".

I am using this technique on the ferrule/spacer assembly. Here is the piece of 1/8 stainless after I cut it from the plate.

Next is the same piece forged.

I can explain more in detail if needed but you probably can tell that there had to be a mock handle made to mold the points to shape. The mock handle was mild steel.

Anyway, here are some photos of the knife.

Fascinating designs you keep coming up with Lin. That one looks so "old time", but I can't remember ever seeing one like it. Great work.

I've been lookin' for a piece of crown stag like that for a couple years.
You must have got to it before I did.

That's a beautiful knife, Lin.

When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Thank you gentlemen.

Karl, I saw this on Jim Crowell's table at the Arkansas show. He had several and this was the smallest. I had to study it for a little while and this knife just appeared in my mind's eye. I had it dyed by Cullpepper.

I don't use many crown pieces because of the challenge to make a knife that looks proportioned to the large pommel. So, I had to more or less design, forge, and fit the blade to the stag instead of the other way around. This business has helped (translated "forced") me to change up the way I think. Look at it from another way or direction. I really think it has helped me to accomplish some difficult and, sometimes, new techniques.

Just amazing........

Thank you guys! I kind of hate to part with this one. I love the period in history that inspired me to make it.
