Blades incorporating meteorite
« on: February 10, 2018, 12:01:00 PM »
A while back I purchased a Campo del Cielo meteorite (1220 grams or just over 43 ounces).  It's about the size of a baseball but obviously HEAVY.  My intent was to have it sliced up, etched, and then some jewelry made for my better half.  However, come to find out, the Campo meteorite has a fairly coarse crystalline structure compared with Gibeon meteorite.  Gibeon is what's normally used for making jewelry.  So, I bought a nice slice of Gibeon and am now having some jewelry made for my wife out of that.

That leaves me with a meteorite I don't really need.  I have a fair amount of cash tied up in this meteorite.  As a display piece it's interesting but only someone interested in meteorites would know what it is.  So I am considering offering it to a custom knife maker who would want to incorporate it into a knife or two or ?.  If any one wants photos of it they can PM me and we can discuss.

The average composition of the Campo del Cielo meteorites is 6.67% Ni, 0.43% Co, 0.25% P, 87 ppm Ga, 407 ppm Ge, and 3.6 ppm Ir, with the remaining 92.6% being iron.

I already have one made for me by Doug Campbell that incorporates meteorite - a very nice multi-fold damascus where one of the layers is made from melted meteorite.  I might want to have another one made using part of this, but mostly want to see if a knife maker can make use of it.   Not just everyone has a knife blade that’s a bit more than 4.5 billion years old  and that came from the asteroid belt by Jupiter.

What kind of money would it take to get a knife made of this material? The cool factor is off the charts.

The cost would have to be up to the knife maker.  I know how much I paid for this big meteorite but how many knives or blades it could or would be incorporated into would be up to the bladesmith and his client.  If his client wanted Thor’s hammer then the whole thing might be used.  If, on the other hand, a bladesmith wanted to make several knives there’s plenty here.

A knife from out of this world. Pretty neat John.

Thanks Tim.  It really does make a very unique knife.  Now all I need is to find somebody who wants to take on the project.

I know Jay Neilson has made a few knives that incorporated meteorite. You might try and get ahold of him and see what he thinks.

Lin Rhea would be a good place to start, John. Why not PM him.  He's a Master Smith in the ABS, and has built a very famous knife with meteorite for the fellow that did that television show on finding meteorites ..... if he isn't interested I'm sure he'll point you to someone who would be interested.  Do you have a photo you could text? 678.300.2883

Some photos (hopefully this works) showing the meteorite knife that Doug Campbell made for me a while back along with a few of the meteorite I'm trying to get into the hands of a blade smith that wants to work with it.
