Homemade Arrow Saw!
« on: February 04, 2008, 04:43:00 PM »
Here is the simplest way to make you very own arrow saw for carbon, aluminum and wood!  The cost should be well under $50.00 depending on if you can get the saw on sale and if you have any of the other items around the shop.  Make sure when you apply the left read tape you measure from the blade back to where the angle aluminum starts at the saw so that you are cutting the length arrow from the nock to the end!  I made this mistake on my fist arrow saw!!!!!  You will notice I mounted my Bitzenberger jig to the board so that as I cut an arrow I fletch up the arrow.  I use fletch tape on my carbons and it holds great!

Hope this helps.  Mike

Harbor Freight Mini Cut Off Saw............$20.00
Pine Board.................................$5.00
Angle aluminum cut to 36"..................$10.00
Left read self adhesive tape...............$8.00
Aluminum door security slide stop..........$2.00

Leo,

You're right with the observation......I've only cut about 2 dozen carbon arrows since I made this arrow saw.  It's fun building one of these homemade arrow saws though!

Take care,
Mike

Nice Job Mike....I like the design and you've been creative, using normal off-the-shelf components.

Nice, I have added something else to my to-do list!
Is the angle aluminum 1X1X1/8?

Mike how long do those blades last cutting carbon. I bought on and the blade is already dull after several cuts on 1/2 doz carbons.

Nice job.  Now this might inspire me to take the HF mini saw I bought out of the box and do something with it.

Very nice!

I have the same saw, just never made an actual stand for it and the arrows.I usually just mark 'em and chop with the saw.Love your idea!

I have made mine similar to that one,but I made my adjustable stop block alittle different.I made my block and drilled a taper with a chamfer bit like the more expensive saw stops.I'll set the arrow in the taper and adjust the vise end just loose enough to allow me to rotate the arrow shaft while I'm cutting it like the more expensive arrow saws.I bring the saw down into the arrow about half way through and rotate the shaft as it is cutting and that gives me a squarer cut.I like to use the abrasive blade and I've cut around 8-10 dozen carbons and 3-4 dozen aluminums on the same blade it came with. They are good little saws for cutting carbons.

To answer a few questions......I can usually get at least 6-10 dozen carbon arrows cut before I have to put a new blade on.  I recommend making several chops slowly so that the blade cuts the shaft clean.  The number of cuts per blade depends on what type of arrows you are cutting.  Yes I used 1"x1"X1/8" angle aluminum.  I hope this helps and if you have a better design let me know as I am always playing with a way to make this set up better and better!  Just keep this in mind when deciding if this saw is what you want.....this is made for a do it yourself person looking to cut a few arrows from time to time.  I wouldn't recommend this saw if you are an archery shop cutting hundreds of arrows a day!  The blades  will eat you up in cost.  Then I would say buy a good quality commercial grade Apple Arrow Saw which has the higher RPM's!

Take care,
Mike

Aren't there abrasive blades made for that saw?
