Which Longbow....MOAB or Whip ????
« on: February 05, 2008, 11:45:00 AM »
I am seriously considering ordering a new longbow.

The two bows I am interested in are the Thunderstick MOAB and the Tolelke Whip.  Unfortunately I have not shot either of these longbows......

I would love to hear your opinions on these two sticks. Pictures would also be appreciated.

Ive never shot a MOAB but have shot a Whip alot, the Whip is a great bow, fast, quiet and easy to hit with, Mr. Toelke is also a very nice guy have exchange e-mails with him a few times. Agood friend has had one of his recurves,a Whip and his classic Dstyle longbow and they all shot great. Hes getting a 52 in. 1 pc. recurve from him now cant wait to try it also. From what Ive heard about MOABs you cant go wrong with them either.

I've owned and shoot both. Still have the Whip. I believe Tolke has a try before you buy program, might want to take advantage of it.

Very different grips Joe. Try them if you can.

I own a Toelke R/D WHip.  I am very happy with it.  I have never shot the MOAB so I can't comment on it.

Howzit Joe,

I can only add my two cents for Dan Toelke as I have no experience with the MOAB---only that I have read that it is an excellent bow.

Dan will send you a demo bow to try. If you like, you can buy. If not, send it  back to him. I took him up on his offer --- read Dan Toelke (da real deal) further down if you haven't already. Now my friend Richard haa a new Whip and I'll have to wait for mine.

Give Dan a call, I'm glad I did and will call him again in the near future.

I'll echo above posts by saying that if possible, try shooting both of them. For me the grip of the Whip fit my hand perfectly----great design.

Aloha,

       Mark

The grip can be a issue. The MOAB looks like the typical locator grip on a longbow. I know I would want a Whip without the thumb rest.

Nope, not in my opinion. I've shot all of Terry's MOAB's and think they are an exceptional 1pc longbow. I really like the grip...hard to describe but a cross between a longbow and recurve grip with the thumb inset into the grip, not really a thumb rest per se.

I've only shot one whip and thought it an excellent bow also. In comparison of the two, I liked the MOAB's grip a bit better, found them too close to call in speed/quiet/handshock etc, and found the MOAB a bit higher on the eye candy scale.

I agree, shoot both if you can, but I know you already know that.   ;)

Joe, I have a 60"53#@28 T/D whip that i have had for three weeks now.It is a very nice bow with a classic D-shape when strung, good speed and very very quite.I had a MOAB that i sold that i wish i had back. I would say the Moab was faster then the Whip but not by alot. The grips are very different the Whip with a locator and thumb rest(very nice)and the MOAB has a deeper locator that really locks your hand in like a Shrew. If you want Joe i am going on vacation in two week i could send the whip to you so you could give it a try.Chad

I don't know anything about the Moab, but the Whip is the real deal, I have one that I won't be parting with and you can't find someone nicer to work with then Dan...

Don't know anything about a 'whip'...but I do know you'd be hard pressed to find a better hybrid longbow than the 60" MOAB.

I agree. The MOAB grip is extremely comfortable and stable.

The tiger maple veneers look nice too.

Joe,
Can't comment on the MOAB, but I have a WHIP which is hands-down the finest bow I have ever shot/owned. Additionally, the WHIP is truly a work of art -- beautiful to look at. As was mentioned in some of the other posts, Dan Toelke is a real gentleman and ethical businessman -- you'll enjoy doing business with him. Talk to him about a trial program.

Can speak for the MOAB only.  It is smooth, quiet, quick and attractive.  At 28" mine shot 2fps slower than my Morrison Shawnee (at the same weight).  Jim is a stand up fellow, and his bow designs are top notch.  I just bought my 5th bow from him, a 56" MAG that I am currently putting through the paces.  Good Luck.  Picking a new longbow is such a fine conundrum!
